The Sunflower lanyard is a simple way of showing people that you have a disability that you might not be able to see.
This could be, for example:
- sensory loss, including difficulty seeing or hearing
- a physical disability that may not be obvious
- autism
- a learning disability
- anxiety or any other mental health condition.
Sunflower lanyards are for people who want to let us know that they may need some extra help.
This means that you may need a helping hand, more understanding, more time at an appointment, on transport, or in public spaces.
How we can support you
When you wear a lanyard, a member of staff may ask you if there's anything we can do to help you.
You're welcome to complete the card that comes with your lanyard to help us understand how we can support you.
We understand that not everyone with a hidden disability requires extra support.
Sunflower lanyards are an easy way for you to let us know if you do.
Examples of how we can support you:
- Help getting to your appointment
- Help communicating, for example by using a hearing loop, interpreter or braille
- Longer appointment times
- Using simple English, avoiding jargon and speaking calmly
- Help in avoiding crowded places.
Collect a sunflower lanyard
You can collect a lanyard from the Children's Unit or Children's Outpatients.
The lanyard is yours to keep and use each visit.
Staff wearing sunflower lanyards
Some of our staff wear sunflower lanyards to show people that they have a disability that you might not be able to see.
Please show patience, respect and kindness at all times.
