New programme is supporting vulnerable young people in hospital

WAY Beacons is a new project being run from the Children’s Emergency Department, which seeks to connect with young people during a moment of crisis, to provide a listening ear, guidance and to help them access further support and opportunities in the local community.
Often, vulnerable young people attend the Emergency Department or Urgent Treatment Centre with issues including substance misuse, violence or other risk-taking or criminal behaviours.
WAY Beacons aims to target those young people, and offer them a positive role model outside of the hospital environment who can support them through a mentorship programme.
In just a few months, already 12 young people have been supported through WAY Beacons, with the programme aiming to support many more over winter.
If you're looking for a way to give back to your community and make a meaningful impact, consider volunteering as a WAY Mentor. Your commitment involves just one hour a week for 12 months, plus five hours of training.
