New Ward Hosts to improve eating and drinking experience for patients in hospital

From today (Monday 18 November), a number of wards are introducing a Ward Host, employed by Serco, who will provide a new catering service to all patients.
Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Neptune, Kingfisher, Teal, Woodpecker and Linnet will be supported every day by their Ward Host, who will have overall responsibility for all catering requirements, including meal ordering, mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks, all drinks and delivery of breakfast, lunch and dinner.
As part of these changes to catering, the lunch and dinner service will also be swapped, meaning patients will have their main hot meal in the evening and a light lunch during the day. This will ensure the patients are more full, less likely to be interrupted whilst eating and have an overall improved experience when in hospital.
In addition, every ward will also have a new breakfast trolley available every day, which will improve the variety of breakfast options.
Food ordering is moving to a paperless system, which not only improves the process for staff but also supports the Trust’s sustainability work by reducing the carbon footprint.
The introduction of Ward Hosts follows a number of successful initiatives already underway, including improved and enhanced menus, child-friendly food options on the Children’s Unit and the option of a hot meal in the Emergency Department.
