We diagnose and treat patients with a wide range of eye problems including:

  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Cataracts
  • Corneal graft
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Paediatrics and squints
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal detachment
  • Ocular plastics

Regular eye checks should provide the basis for maintaining proper eye health, as some of the serious eye conditions do not have any visible early warning symptoms.

If a problem occurs suddenly and unexpectedly, then you should seek specialist advice from your GP or optometrist.

Optometry

The optometrists in our department provide the following services for patients who are referred from the ophthalmologists, their own optometrist or their GP:

Low vision assessment (LVA)

For patients where good vision cannot be achieved with conventional spectacles or contact lenses.

Low vision aids such as specialist spectacles, magnifiers, telescopes, electronic magnifiers, lighting and other non-optical methods to optimise the use of remaining vision are demonstrated and discussed.

Adult refraction (eye test)

For those with complex prescription demands or when it is required by an ophthalmologist for diagnostic purposes.

Paediatric refraction

For children attending the orthoptic service to determine if any spectacles are required.

We do not dispense spectacles at GWH - our optometrists issue a prescription, where appropriate, that can be taken to any optical practice.

Contact lenses

For patients of all ages where there is a medical need - e.g. where vision cannot be improved with spectacles or for relief from pain caused by certain eye conditions.

We fit and prescribe many types of specialist lenses including:

  • RGP corneal
  • Soft
  • Cosmetic
  • Scleral
  • Hybrid lenses

Age-related conditions

Our optometrists also work in the Eye Clinic alongside the ophthalmologists providing glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration services.
